mixed urban block in soho
A complex and seemingly inflexible site comprising a number of once separate buildings on a triangular footprint in London’s Soho district had frustrated previous attempts to gain planning consent for a mixed use development. FORM Design Architecture was subsequently appointed and the scheme put forward won Planning and Listed Building consents.
The design subtly integrated a new seven-storey building with the intricate geometry and fabric of the eight retained and reconfigured 18th and 19th Century buildings, fitting old and new together in an innovative jigsaw formation. Space was released sufficient for a 44-bedroom boutique hotel, seven apartments, three retail units and a 250-cover restaurant.
The project that has now been realised by another team, follows FORM’s original consent, but variations have been made at a detailed level.
