living in the roof

A roof addition has provided characterful new space for the owners of a C19th coach house. Perched high among the tree tops, the geometry of the intervention resolves the awkward form of the original house. A new roof floats over the original and provides enclosure for a studio room, shower and south facing deck. Two cedar clad blocks, a subversion of traditional dormers, intersect the roof to provide sky-lit spaces at stair head and over the shower. The frameless glazing over gives an illusion of being outside with unexpected views of scudding clouds.
